Barents PhD Summer School

Arkhangelsk

20-26 August

About School

The IV Barents PhD Summer School is a collaborative project between the universities of Umeå, Oulu, Tromsø and Archangelsk aiming at gathering young researchers and experts from the Northern universities for the PhD course “Barents Region – the Territory of Ecology” to address the key issues of the regional development and nature preservation.
Significant natural and energy resources, wide perspectives of economic and industrial development have made the Arctic Region the strategic territory for the leading economic and industrial countries, and consequently one of the most vulnerable one. Therefore, the issues of exploration and preservation of the Northern environment are on the top of the agenda nowadays and demand multilateral cooperation and its addressing by different actors.

The relevance of the Barents PhD School is also determined by the implementation of the Action Plan on Climate Change elaborated in 2013 within the framework of the Barents Euro-Arctic cooperation. The Action Plan presupposes significant contribution from northern academia in meeting the key policy areas: mitigation, adaptation, research and outreach.
The core subject of the School is also in line with the Russian Federation Chairmanship Programme in Barents Euro-Arctic Council for 2015-2017 and the announced Russian national project “2017 - Year of the Environment” with the focus on ecological education, forest regeneration, resource management, environmental pollution prevention and infrastructure development.

Arkhangelsk

Arkhangelsk region is located in northern European Russia on the shore of the White Sea. It includes the Arctic archipelagos of Franz Josef Land and Novaya Zemlya. The city of Arkhangelsk was founded in 1584. It has a population of about 350 thousand people and is the administrative center of the region. It is a historic seaport city which has interesting activities to offer and places to visit. It lies on both banks of the Northern Dvina River near its exit into the White Sea. The city stretches for about 40 km (25 miles). Peter the Great contributed immensely to the development of Arkhangelsk as a center of sea and river navigation and shipbuilding. In 1693 he founded the first shipyard on Solombala island where the first ship “Saint Paul” was launched in 1694.

In commemoration to this outstanding contribution, monument to Peter the Great was erected in 1911 on the Northern Dvina Embankment. The Arkhangelsk region is called the White Nights Land. From the middle of May and almost to the end of July to the north of Polar Circle the sun never disappears behind the horizon. It is regarded as a mysterious phenomenon that attracts visitors and adds to a special atmosphere of the city. Nowadays Arkhangelsk is an administrative, business and cultural center of the Arkhangelsk region. Historical monuments, museums and beauty of its landscapes attract lots of tourists from Russian cities and from abroad annually. More information: http://pomorland.travel/en/
